Become a YuGo sport and exercise volunteer

Do you like getting out in the fresh air?

Could you use your skills to support adults with additional needs to access sport and exercise?

Are you enthusiastic about working to create a more inclusive community in Gloucestershire?

Then the role of YuGo Sport and Exercise Volunteer could be for you!

Why do we need you?

YuGo Exercise Engagement Pioneers are a company that aspires to create sustainable opportunities for adults with additional needs to enjoy accessible sport and exercise. We view physical exercise as a platform to promote positive physical, social and emotional health, and our members are always at the core of what we do.

All of the profit we generate through our activities is reinvested into our parent charity, Allsorts Gloucestershire, who provide a wide variety of activities for disabled children and their families living in Gloucestershire.

You’ll be helping us to provide opportunities for more adults with additional needs

We’re growing all the time, with new members joining YuGo and taking part in all of the fun! Your role as a volunteer will help us to provide opportunities for more adults with additional needs to access sport and exercise.

How much time should you offer?
When would you be needed?
Where will you be based?

We ask our volunteers to be available for one of our sports and exercise clubs each week – but if you can spare more time, we would love to have your support! Our clubs run a minimum of 44 weeks of the year, in locations across Gloucestershire.

We know you will miss the occasional week and that’s no problem. However, lots of members rely upon the consistency of the people supporting them, so we are looking for volunteers who can commit to clubs on a regular basis.

Our HQ is based in Stroud Town Centre, at the Allsorts Activity Hub. If we need to get together for a coffee or access training, it’s likely that we’ll do this from the Activity Hub. However, almost all of the clubs are off-site across the Stroud District and progressively across other locations in Gloucestershire.

We spoke to one of YuGo’s rising stars, World-class swimmer Becky Turner…

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

We caught up with Becky earlier this week right before she headed off to the Down’s Syndrome World Swimming Championships in Portugal. Max Pemberton our YuGo Director of Sport asked Becky a few questions…

Max Pemberton

Max: Tell us a bit about yourself! What does a day in the life of YOU look like? What would you like people to know about you?

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

Becky: My name is Becky and I am 23 years old. I have recently moved into supported living. I am sporty. I am a competitive swimmer and am part of the GB Down’s Syndrome Swimming squad. I do swimming training three times a week and personal training to support this. During my week I also attend lots of clubs and activities, many with YuGo and Allsorts.

Max Pemberton

Max: Tell us about how you got involved with YuGo? Did you have a goal you wanted to achieve? Did someone recommend YuGo to you?

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

Becky: I have attended a personal training session through Allsorts for about 3 years. This was to help improve my cardiovascular fitness and support my swimming training especially as I want to be part of the GB swimming squad. I was asked to be in the promotional video for YuGo and when I heard about the new clubs being introduced in the day time I was keen to take part as this helps give structure to my day, gives me a chance to socialise and also keep working on my fitness.

Max Pemberton

Max: Tell us about your time coming to YuGo? Has it helped you achieve a goal? Have you made new friends? What is your favourite thing to do with YuGo?

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

Becky: Being involved in YuGo has helped me in many ways. It has helped me with my fitness for my swimming competitions. At the YuGo clubs I have made new friends. My favourite thing is boxing and playing different games.

Max Pemberton

Max: You have a really big event coming up. Can you tell us more about it? What is happening? When is it happening? How are you feeling about it?

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

Becky: I am going to the World Down’s Syndrome Championships in Portugal on Friday. The competition starts on Monday 17th October for 5 days. I am competing in 5 events. I am feeling excited but I am a little bit nervous too!

Max Pemberton

Max: What has YuGo done to help you with your preparation? Have you completed extra training? Have you accessed more clubs?

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

Becky: YuGo has helped me with my land training for my swimming. As well as my normal PT session on a Friday, I have attended an extra PT session with Dan over the last few weeks to help me get ready. Attending the other clubs has also helped my fitness.

Max Pemberton

Max: Are you ready for Worlds?!

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

Becky: Yes!

Max Pemberton

Max: Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

Becky is going to the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships

Becky: I am going to swim the best I can. The YuGo clubs have helped me to get fitter, stronger and focus my mind. I really enjoy the clubs, they have given me things to do in the daytime. I like the coaches and the members.
